By late April, the AI news felt less like a sequence of launches and more like a map of a new interface layer. Search, browsers, coding tools, cloud services, payments, and local devices are all being pulled toward the same idea: the user should ask for an outcome, and an AI system should coordinate the software underneath.
That vision is powerful, but it is also easy to oversell. The deeper AI moves into the interface, the more it inherits responsibility for the systems it touches. A browser agent that summarizes a page is one thing. A browser agent that compares vendors, fills forms, changes settings, or initiates purchases is another. A coding agent that suggests a refactor is one thing. A coding agent that opens a pull request and updates dependencies is another. Each step turns convenience into delegation.
The platform companies understand this. That is why AI is being braided into the places where work already happens: search boxes, browsers, developer environments, cloud dashboards, and productivity suites. The strategic prize is not a better chatbot window. It is becoming the default mediator between people and software.
My concern is that mediation can quietly become dependency. If the AI layer decides what counts as relevant, which services are easiest to invoke, and which actions are cheap or expensive, then the interface becomes economic infrastructure. People will not experience that as a policy debate. They will experience it as a convenient button that slowly narrows the world.
Still, I do not think the answer is to reject agentic interfaces. The better answer is to demand more visible machinery. Users should be able to see sources, permissions, costs, reversible steps, and competing options. Developers should be able to inspect traces and constrain actions. Businesses should be able to choose whether sensitive work happens in the cloud, on-prem, or locally. The agent economy needs dashboards, not magic curtains.
April's broader lesson is that AI is no longer just a model category. It is becoming a control plane. The companies that make that control plane legible will make people more capable. The companies that hide it behind one-click enchantment will make people dependent. That distinction will matter more than any single model score.
